⛸️ This Week's Speed Skating Highlights! - 2026.03.25

Hello, speed skating fans! Your Speed Skating Maniac is here! ⛸️💨

We're already at the end of March 2026! The heat of the Milano-Cortina Olympics is still fresh, are you all enjoying the speed skating fever? Today, I've packed news that will make our hearts race, so let's check it out! 👀

👑 Queen of Milano-Cortina 2026, Jutta Leerdam

Did you all see the highlight video of the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics? Dutch speed skating star Jutta Leerdam set a new Olympic record of 1:12.31 in the women's 1000m, proudly taking home the gold medal! [2] It's an incredible result, beating her teammate Femke Kok. Moreover, she secured a silver medal in the 500m, proving once again that she is undeniably the top superstar of the Netherlands. Isn't that explosive speed cutting through the ice just thrilling? [2]

⚔️ Gender Duel Match?! Joy Beune vs Jenning de Boo

A super fun event match took place in the Netherlands! It was a special 3,000m gender duel between Joy Beune and Jenning de Boo [3]. How did this start? It all began as a joke when Jenning de Boo told his teammate Kjeld Nuis (Joy Beune's boyfriend!) that he thought he could beat Joy. Joy Beune responded to this provocation with a "Bring it on!", leading to a serious competition between pros. The result? A fantastic victory for Joy Beune! [3] It was an incredibly entertaining race that speed skating fans absolutely couldn't miss.

🎥 Sweat on the Ice, Austin Kleba Documentary

A short documentary featuring American Olympic speed skater Austin Kleba has been released [4]. The athlete's fierce training process and dynamic movements on the ice were beautifully captured using professional filming techniques. It's a video where you can feel the blood, sweat, and tears our athletes put in to shave off just 0.01 seconds, so make sure to watch it! [4]

🤯 Throwback to PyeongChang's Shocking Moment & Roots of Japan's Speed Skating 🇯🇵

Do you all remember the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics? There was an unprecedented incident during a speed skating race where a skater grabbed his opponent's skate blade with his hand mid-race 🤯 [5]. A shorts video shedding light again on that dizzying moment that led to collisions, controversy, and disqualification has been uploaded. It's truly an unbelievable sudden action even when watching it again [5].

Also, I brought a story about speed skating in neighboring Japan. It is said that most of Japan's national speed skating athletes are from 'Gunma Prefecture'. Gunma Prefecture has had ice rinks since 1949, and thanks to that, most schools in the area have operated ice skating clubs for a long time [1]. It makes us realize once again that a solid local infrastructure and lifetime sports serve as a strong foundation for producing elite athletes [1].

That's all the news I prepared for today! From Olympic records to exciting event matches, the charm of speed skating seems truly endless. I'll be back next week with faster and more thrilling news! Have a day cooler than the ice! ❄️💙
