๐ŸŒธ Spring Breezes and Classical News! Sumi Jo's Award & Sold-out Concerts ๐ŸŽถ - 2026.04.02

Hello, classical music geek friends! ๐ŸŒธ Your Slave of Music is back with the warm spring breezes of April! Spring of 2026 is already in full swing. We have a lot of amazing news to make our hearts beat faster this week. Shall we dive right in? ๐ŸŽถ

๐Ÿ† The Footsteps of Proud Maestros

First, a huge congratulations is in order! Our eternal prima donna, Soprano Sumi Jo, has been selected as the winner of the '2026 Samsung Ho-Am Prize' for the Arts, an award given to those who have contributed to human development [1]. She was highly recognized for elevating the status of Korean vocal music while performing as a lead on the world's top stages, including the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera, for 40 years. From establishing the 'Sumi Jo International Singing Competition' to advising on AI-based music research as a distinguished visiting professor at KAIST, I want to give a standing ovation to her endless passion and endeavors ๐Ÿ‘. The glorious awards ceremony will be held on June 1st!

There was also meaningful stage news from another living legend, Pianist Kun-woo Paik . This year marks his 70th debut anniversary! He took the stage at Shinyoung Chamber Hall to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Shinyoung Securities, playing Schubert's 'Piano Sonata No. 13' and delivering deep artistic emotion to the audience. A maestro's performance with 70 years of piano history... I'm so jealous of the audience who were there ๐ŸŽน.

๐ŸŽญ Get Ready for Ticketing! Highly Anticipated Shows in May

Next month, in May, massive scale performances are waiting for us. The Korea National Opera will stage Jules Massenet's opera 'Werther' at the Seoul Arts Center Opera House from May 23rd to 26th [2]. Based on Goethe's novel, this production will be conducted by Seoul National University Professor Hong Seok-won and performed by the Korean National Symphony Orchestra. Director Park Jong-won of the movie 'Our Twisted Hero' takes the helm, promising to implement visual techniques like zoom-ins and flashbacks on stage, making it visually spectacular! Tenors Lee Beom-joo and Kim Yo-han are cast as Werther.

Furthermore, the Monte-Carlo Ballet from Monaco is visiting Korea in mid-May to perform 'Swan Lake' [2]. With choreography by the master Jean-Christophe Maillot and the first Korean ballerino Ahn Jae-yong taking the stage, you'd better keep your May schedule open ๐Ÿฉฐ.

Did anyone manage to book tickets for the upcoming April 18th concert? The 'Mozartiana' concert featuring violinist Danny Koo and the Ditto Orchestra at Gwanak Art Hall is completely sold out [3]. Gwanak Art Hall's '2026 Gwanak GPS' seasonal performances have been selling out consecutively since the New Year's concert, thanks to curation that hits the spot for residents' tastes, ranging from pop to classical. Indeed, fans are the first to recognize a good program!

๐ŸŽป The Charm of Chamber Music and Exploring Symphonies

I also brought news that will make you fall in love with the tight-knit charm of chamber music. An interview with pianist Seong-Jin Cho's chamber music partner was published, and the phrase "Music has resilience" really touched my heart warmly . This article also highlighted the prestige of the Indianapolis Competition, where proud Korean performers like Clara Jumi Kang and Jinjoo Cho have won. Also, Sejong University Professor Hwang Moon-hee is holding a 'Music Walk X' piano recital with top-tier performers like flutist Jang Ro-sa, violinist Hwang Soon-bin, and cellist Song In-jung, showcasing Hummel's uniquely brilliant and delicate chamber music ensemble [4].

Lastly, some magnificent symphony news! The Gimcheon Symphony Orchestra will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 'Fate', one of the most famous pieces in classical music history [5]. It's a piece that embodies human will to overcome hardship and advance to victory, right? I highly recommend a video that very entertainingly explains the beginning of the 4th movement, which is the highlight of this piece [6]. Knowing the structure and hidden meanings doubles the emotion and thrills, so I strongly suggest watching it before going to a classical concert! ๐ŸŽง

That's all the news the Slave of Music has prepared for this week. I hope everyone has a happy week treating your ears to beautiful classical melodies on these warm spring days! I'll be back next week with more heart-pounding news. Bye! ๐Ÿ’–
