⛸️ Seo Min-kyu Wins Bronze in Senior GP Debut! This Week in Figure Skating 🎉 - 2026.10.26 | Figure Skating

Hello, fans! 🙋‍♀️ This week's biggest story is Seo Min-kyu's Senior Grand Prix debut! He stood on the podium at the 1st event in Angers, France, and proudly announced himself as the next big name in Korean men's skating ^[4].

🥉 A Bronze Medal on Debut, and Third Place!

On the 25th (local time), Seo scored 161.07 in the men's singles free skate, which combined with his 83.83 short program gave him a final total of 244.90 points for 3rd place ^[1]. France's Adam Siao Him Fa won gold with 284.24, and Japan's Kao Miura took silver with 247.96. The gap between Seo and Miura was just 3.06 points 😮 ^[3].

🎬 A Rollercoaster Program Set to Les Parapluies de Cherbourg

His free skate was set to the OST of the film 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg' ^[3]. He started strong, landing the quadruple Salchow-triple toe loop combination cleanly ^[5]. The second quad Salchow lost rotation and was downgraded to a double, and he fell on the triple Axel landing, losing 4.00 GOE points 😥 ^[2].

But Seo didn't waver! After a Level 4 change-foot combination spin to close the first half, he nailed the triple Axel-Euler-triple Salchow-double Axel sequence in the bonus-point segment ^[1]. That sequence earned 2.06 GOE and a single-element high score of 19.22 ^[3]. He also cleanly completed the triple loop and triple flip, then finished with Level 4 step sequence and flying camel spin and a full choreographic sequence ^[5]. Staying focused even after a fall? That's what a true ace looks like 👏 ^[2].

🌱 Who Is Seo Min-kyu?

He won the 2024 Junior World Championships and took silver in both 2025 and this year ^[2]. He also became the first Korean men's skater to win the Junior Grand Prix Final last December, earning the first men's or women's gold from Korea since Kim Yuna in 2005, 20 years earlier ^[1]. Inspired by his mother, former figure skater and coach Kim Eun-ju, he started skating young and built his fundamentals in his hometown of Daegu. His smooth skating and expressive performances are his strengths ✨ ^[2].

🔄 Filling the Gap Left by Cha Jun-hwan

Cha Jun-hwan has temporarily suspended national team activities and international competition this season, so he did not compete at this event ^[4]. Fans are hoping Seo can fill the space left by Cha, who had long competed against the world largely on his own ^[6].

📅 Next Goal: The Final!

Seo will compete at the 3rd Grand Prix event in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, from November 6 to 8, aiming for a spot in the Grand Prix Final ^[3]. Let's cheer for another great performance! 💙
